How do weight loss pills work?

If you're searching for a clinically proven way to support your weight loss, prescription weight loss pills and tablets are a safe and effective option — when assessed and prescribed by a qualified clinician as part of a structured, clinician-led programme – which is exactly how Bliss works.

Reduces calorie absorption

Orlistat blocks enzymes in the gut that break down dietary fat, meaning a portion of calories passes through the body instead of being absorbed.

Encourages healthier food choices

Because high fat meals can cause digestive effects, patients naturally move toward more balanced meals and fewer high fat snacks.

Supports steady weight loss

By lowering daily calorie intake without suppressing appetite, weight reduces gradually and consistently when combined with routine eating habits.

Improves metabolic health

Reducing fat absorption can help improve cholesterol levels and support better long term metabolic control alongside lifestyle changes.

Frequently asked questions

  • Yes — prescription weight loss pills have been clinically proven to support meaningful, sustained weight loss when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity. Orlistat has been shown in controlled trials to help patients lose an average of 10–12% of their starting body weight over 6–12 months — significantly more than diet and exercise alone.

It's important to understand that no weight loss medication works in isolation: the evidence consistently shows the best outcomes when tablets are taken as part of a clinician-led programme that includes dietary and lifestyle guidance.

  • Prescription weight loss tablets prescribed through a GPhC-registered service like Bliss are clinically regulated and individually assessed for safety. Before issuing any prescription, our clinicians review your full medical history, current medications, BMI, and any existing health conditions — this process is designed to ensure the treatment is both appropriate and safe for you specifically.

Like all prescription medicines, weight loss tablets can cause side effects (Orlistat's are primarily digestive), and your clinician will discuss these with you during your consultation. You should never take prescription weight loss medication obtained without a legitimate clinical assessment.

  • There is no single 'best' weight loss tablet — the most effective option depends on your individual health profile and what is driving your weight. Orlistat is the most widely prescribed oral weight loss medication in the UK and has the most extensive long-term evidence base. It is typically the first-line tablet option. Your Bliss clinician will review your circumstances and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you.

  • Different weight loss pills work through very different mechanisms. Orlistat works in your digestive system by inhibiting lipase — the enzyme your body uses to break down dietary fat — meaning roughly one third of the fat you eat passes through unabsorbed, reducing your calorie intake.

GLP-1 receptor agonists (like Oral Wegovy) mimic a gut hormone to slow digestion and signal fullness to the brain. All mechanisms are distinct, which is why the right treatment varies by patient.

  • At Bliss, the two prescription-only oral medications licensed specifically for weight loss are Orlistat (120mg) and the Wegovy pill. Both require a valid prescription from a registered clinician. A lower-dose, over-the-counter version of Orlistat (Alli, 60mg) is available without a prescription in pharmacies but has a lower efficacy profile.

Over-the-counter 'slimming tablets' containing ingredients like caffeine, green tea extract, or glucomannan are not licensed medicines and lack the robust clinical evidence of prescription treatments — they are not prescribed or recommended by Bliss clinicians.

  • Yes — the first oral GLP-1 medication licensed for weight loss in the UK is now available. The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) from Novo Nordisk received MHRA approval on 11th June 2026, making it the first GLP-1 tablet licensed specifically for weight management in the UK.

Oral semaglutide has been available in the UK as Rybelsus for some time, but that formulation is licensed for type 2 diabetes only. The Wegovy pill is a separate, higher-dose formulation approved specifically for weight loss.

Injectable GLP-1 treatments remain available too: Mounjaro, Wegovy (injection), Saxenda, and Nevolat are all prescribable through Bliss today. Register your interest to find out which treatment may be right for you.

  • Prescription weight loss pills must be prescribed by a qualified clinician following a medical assessment — they cannot legally be dispensed without a valid prescription.

You can access a fully online consultation through Bliss: complete a health questionnaire, and if you're eligible, one of our registered clinicians will issue a prescription and your medication will be dispensed by our GPhC-registered pharmacy and delivered discreetly to your door.

No GP referral or face-to-face appointment is required. Bliss is GPhC-registered, so you can be confident in the safety and legitimacy of any prescription you receive.

  • It depends on which weight loss pill you're taking.

Orlistat begins working from the very first dose — its fat-blocking effect is immediate. Measurable weight loss typically becomes apparent over the first four to eight weeks, provided you're following a calorie-controlled diet alongside your medication.

The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide) works differently. As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, it is gradually titrated up over several months to minimise side effects, so noticeable weight loss usually begins after four to eight weeks and builds progressively. Clinical trials of oral semaglutide show the most significant results at 52 weeks, with patients losing an average of 15% of their body weight over that period.

For both treatments, the most significant weight loss generally occurs within the first six months. Your Bliss clinician will review your progress at regular intervals and adjust your treatment if needed.

  • Weight loss pills and injections are both effective prescription treatments but differ in mechanism, administration, and average outcomes. Oral treatments like Orlistat produce average weight loss of 6–12% body weight in trials.

GLP-1 injection treatments — particularly Mounjaro (tirzepatide) — have produced average weight loss of up to 20%+ in clinical trials, making them among the most effective weight loss medications currently available.

However, many patients strongly prefer a daily oral tablet over a weekly injection, and for those patients Orlistat may produce better real-world adherence and therefore comparable practical outcomes.
