• Oral Weight Loss Support Now Available

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily oral tablet containing semaglutide — the same active ingredient as Wegovy injections. As of 11 June 2026, it is the first GLP-1 weight loss pill approved by the MHRA for use in the UK. The pill will be available privately through Bliss as soon as stock arrives.

Status as of June 2026:

  • MHRA approved (11 June 2026) — first GLP-1 weight loss pill licensed in the UK
  • FDA approved (December 2025) — launched in the US January 2026
  • UK availability: launching at Bliss as soon as stock is available
  • NHS access: not yet — pending NICE review

Everything you need to know about the Wegovy pill

For anyone who has been hesitant about prescription weight loss treatment because of injections, oral semaglutide — the once-daily Wegovy pill — could be the option that changes that. A tablet version of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, is currently moving through MHRA approvalfor use in the UK, and industry expectations point to it becoming available to prescribe later in 2026.

This guide covers what you need to know now that the pill is approved: how oral semaglutide works, who is eligible, what the clinical trial data shows, the MHRA-approved dosing schedule, how it sits alongside existing options, and how to get ahead of the queue at Bliss.

The Wegovy pill is now approved in the UK

On 11 June 2026, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approved the oral semaglutide tablet— widely known as the Wegovy pill — for use in the UK as a treatment for weight loss and weight management. Marketing authorisation for the new indication was granted to Novo Nordisk, making this the first GLP-1 receptor agonist tablet for weight loss to be licensed in the UK.

The full Summary of Product Characteristics (SmPC) and Patient Information Leaflet will be published on the MHRA Products website within seven days of approval.

The next step in UK availability is a NICE assessment for NHS use. In the meantime, the Wegovy pill is available to prescribe privately through regulated UK pharmacies once stock arrives.

What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is an oral tablet formulation of semaglutide — the same active ingredient used in Wegovy weight loss injections. Developed by Novo Nordisk, it is taken once daily as a tablet rather than once weekly as an injection under the skin.

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which your body naturally releases after eating. By activating GLP-1 receptors, semaglutide reduces appetite, makes you feel fuller for longer, and slows the rate at which food leaves the stomach — creating a sustained calorie deficit that supports meaningful weight loss over time.

The oral formulation was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 2025 for adults with obesity or overweight adults with at least one weight-related health condition. It launched in the US in January 2026 and is reported to have achieved the fastest market take-up of any weight loss drug in history [1]

Who is eligible for the Wegovy pill?

Following MHRA approval, the Wegovy oral tablet may be prescribed to adults in the UK who [9]

  • have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above (obesity), or
  • have a BMI between 27 and 30 (overweight) with at least one weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or raised cholesterol

As with all GLP-1 weight loss treatments, the Wegovy pill must be prescribed alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

The pill is most likely to suit:

  • adults who would benefit from medical weight loss support but are uncomfortable with injections
  • those who prefer a daily tablet routine over a weekly injection schedule
  • patients already taking daily medication who find a tablet simpler to incorporate
  • patients considering a lower-maintenance option for long-term weight maintenance after achieving results on an injectable GLP-1 treatment

The pill and the injection are not clinically equivalent — there are meaningful differences in average weight loss outcomes (see below). A Bliss clinician will review your assessment and explain which option, or combination of options, is most appropriate for your goals and health profile.

Does the Wegovy pill work? What the clinical trial data shows

The Wegovy pill (oral semaglutide 25mg) was studied in the OASIS 4 Phase 3 clinical trial over 64 weeks. The results demonstrated clinically meaningful weight loss:

  • Average weight loss at 64 weeks: 13.6% of body weight (25mg group) [2]
  • Placebo group: 2.2% average weight loss over the same period
  • The difference between treatment and placebo: 11.4 percentage points

For context, injectable Wegovy at the standard 2.4mg weekly dose produced an average weight loss of 14.9% over 68 weeks in the STEP 1 trial [3]. A higher-dose injectable formulation of Wegovy (7.2mg weekly) has demonstrated an average weight loss of 20.7% at 72 weeks [4]

The oral pill produces results comparable to the standard-dose injection, with both the injection and the pill delivering meaningfully greater weight loss than placebo. The higher-dose injectable formulation currently delivers greater average weight loss. Individual results depend on starting weight, adherence, diet, activity levels, and dose reached.

How is the Wegovy pill taken?

The MHRA-approved dose escalation schedule:

Like all GLP-1 weight loss treatments, oral semaglutide is started at a low dose and gradually increased. This allows your body to adjust and reduces the risk of side effects such as nausea, which are most common in the early weeks.
The MHRA-approved UK dosing schedule [9] is as follows:

PeriodDaily DoseNotes
Days 1–303mgStarting dose — minimises early side effects
Weeks 5–87mgFirst escalation step
Weeks 9–1214mgSecond escalation step
Month 4 onwards25mgMaintenance dose — this is the dose studied in OASIS 4

Important: the Wegovy pill must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with no more than half a glass of plain water (approximately 120ml). You should wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other medications. This timing restriction does not apply to injectable GLP-1 treatments, which can be taken at any time.

What are the side effects of the Wegovy pill?

The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal — nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation — and are most likely during dose escalation rather than at a stable maintenance dose. For most patients these side effects will settle within a few weeks.

The Wegovy pill shares the same broad side effect profile as injectable GLP-1 treatments. To help minimise early side effects, it is recommended to eat smaller portions, avoid high-fat or spicy meals, and stay well hydrated — particularly in the first weeks of each new dose level.

Less commonly reported side effects include headache, fatigue and dizziness. As with all GLP-1 treatments, there is a rare risk of pancreatitis — if you experience severe or persistent abdominal pain, you should stop the medication and contact a clinician immediately.

Who should avoid the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is not suitable for everyone. It should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. It is also not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

A full clinical assessment at Bliss screens for all relevant contraindications before any prescription is issued, and ongoing clinical support is available throughout your treatment if side effects arise.

How does the Wegovy pill compare to other weight loss treatments?

To understand where the Wegovy pill sits within the wider treatment landscape, the table below sets out headline weight loss results from the major Phase 3 clinical trials for the leading oral and injectable options currently available or in development for the UK market.

The below results come from separate trials with different populations, durations and dose schedules and should be read as a useful benchmark rather than a direct head-to-head comparison.

* The 7.2mg Wegovy dose is a higher-dose injectable formulation studied in a separate trial from the standard 2.4mg weekly dose. Both are once-weekly injections; the 7.2mg formulation delivers a higher weekly dose of semaglutide.

Wegovy pill vs Wegovy injection: a side-by-side comparison

Both the pill and the injection contain semaglutide. The key differences are how you take them, how often, the maximum dose reached, the average weight loss achieved, and some practical considerations around storage and timing.

A 2026 study published in the BMJ suggested that oral GLP-1 treatments may play a role in helping patients maintain weight loss after stopping injections [5]. This points to a potential future pathway for some patients: achieve significant weight loss on a more potent injectable treatment, then transition to a daily pill for maintenance. This is an emerging area and clinical guidance will develop as more real-world evidence becomes available.

Wegovy pill vs Rybelsus: they are not the same thing

When researching oral semaglutide, you will likely come across Rybelsus — another oral semaglutide tablet already available in the UK. It is important to understand the distinction.

Rybelsus is licensed for the management of type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. Its maximum approved dose is 14mg daily. It is prescribed through diabetes treatment pathways, not weight management services.

The Wegovy pill has been developed, dosed, and trialled specifically for obesity and weight management. Its maximum dose of 25mg is considerably higher than Rybelsus, and the clinical data supporting its use comes from weight loss trials rather than diabetes trials. These are two different products with different indications.

If weight loss is your goal, the Wegovy pill is the appropriate treatment. Rybelsus would not be prescribed for weight management at Bliss.

What happens next now that the Wegovy pill is approved?

The 11 June 2026 MHRA approval allows the Wegovy pill to be prescribed privately in the UK once stock is available. Novo Nordisk will now publish UK prescribing guidance, the official Patient Information Leaflet, and the UK list price.

Will the Wegovy pill be available on the NHS?

NHS access for weight loss medications is currently limited to specialist tier 3 weight management services with strict eligibility criteria. Even after MHRA approval and a positive NICE review, the Wegovy pill is likely to be available to most UK patients through regulated private online pharmacies — like Bliss — before becoming accessible via the NHS.

  • The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) will assess the Wegovy pill for cost-effectiveness ahead of any guidance on NHS use in England
  • For Scotland, the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) [6] will undertake a separate review
  • As with the Wegovy injection, NHS access is likely to be limited to specialist tier 3 weight management services in the first instance

For most patients, the Wegovy pill will be accessed privately through regulated UK online pharmacies — like Bliss — following a clinical consultation.

Your questions answered

Is the Wegovy pill available in the UK?

Yes. As of 11 June 2026, the Wegovy oral tablet is MHRA-approved for use in the UK [9]. The pill is now available to prescribe privately through regulated UK pharmacies. Bliss is taking waitlist registrations ahead of stock arriving.

How much weight can you lose on the Wegovy pill?

In the OASIS 4 Phase 3 clinical trial, participants on the maximum 25mg daily dose lost an average of 13.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with 2.2% on placebo [2].

Individual results vary depending on starting weight, dose reached, adherence, diet and activity levels. For context, the standard-dose Wegovy injection (2.4mg weekly) produces an average of 14.9% weight loss over 68 weeks [3].

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Ozempic?

No. Both contain semaglutide, but they are different products with different licensed uses. Ozempic is a weekly injection licensed for the management of type 2 diabetes, not weight loss.

The Wegovy pill is an oral tablet developed specifically for weight management at a higher dose — up to 25mg daily. Ozempic is not licensed for weight loss in the UK and is not prescribed for that purpose at Bliss.

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

No. Both are oral semaglutide tablets, but they are licensed for different conditions. Rybelsus is licensed for the management of type 2 diabetes at doses up to 14mg daily.

The Wegovy pill is developed specifically for weight management at a higher maximum dose of 25mg, backed by dedicated weight loss clinical trial data. Rybelsus is not licensed for weight loss and would not be prescribed for that purpose at Bliss.

Can you take the Wegovy pill with food?

No. The Wegovy pill must be taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, with no more than half a glass of plain water (approximately 120ml). You should then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking other medications.

Food significantly reduces the absorption of oral semaglutide. This timing restriction does not apply to injectable GLP-1 treatments, which can be taken at any time.
